A preoperative surgical blood work-up is a standard part of the pre-surgical assessment to ensure a patient is fit for surgery and to anticipate any complications (e.g. bleeding, anemia, infection, organ dysfunction). The following tests are included in this package:

1. Complete Blood Count (CBC)

  • Purpose: Detect anemia, infection, platelet disorders.

  • Includes:

    • Hemoglobin & Hematocrit (oxygen-carrying capacity)

    • White Blood Cells (infection, immune status)

    • Platelets (clotting ability)

2. Coagulation Profile

  • Purpose: Assess bleeding/clotting risk.

  • Tests:

    • PT/INR (Prothrombin Time / International Normalized Ratio)

    • aPTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time)

3. Renal Function Tests

  • Purpose: Check kidney function before anesthesia.

  • Tests:

    • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)

    • Creatinine

4. Electrolytes

  • Purpose: Detect imbalances that may affect anesthesia/surgery.

  • Common tests:

    • Sodium

    • Potassium

    • Chloride

    • Bicarbonate

5. Liver Function Tests (LFTs)

  • Purpose: Evaluate liver’s ability to metabolize medications.

  • Includes:

    • AST, ALT

    • ALP

    • Bilirubin

6. Blood Glucose / HbA1c

  • Purpose: Identify uncontrolled diabetes (especially in known/suspected diabetics).

7. Blood Typing & Crossmatch

  • Purpose: Prepare for possible transfusion (especially in major surgeries or patients with anemia).

    • ABO & Rh type

    • Crossmatch (if transfusion likely)

• 6 to 12-hour fasting required
